Why Warm Up?

Warm-ups are a vital part of every training session and game of cricket,
but they
don’t just
have to be boring stretches and jogging! Be inspired to
get the most out
of each and every
warm-up, and keep them fun, challenging and exciting.

i) Team-Bonding: the warm-up is the fi rst part of
the session or game, and is a
chance to
get
all of
your
players together, doing some skills or a game
and
interacting with each other.
It not
only signifies
the start
of your session, but if
run properly can
give everyone a chance
to have
a laugh and joke
with
each
other.

ii) Related-Skills: by trying some of the warmups
in this section, you can get your
players to
start
learning and practicing skills and movement
patterns that will be
useful for them in not
only
cricket, but
other
sports as well. By using these
movements and skills regularly each
session they
will become better
at them
and
they will ultimately
start using them when needed
during games.

iii) Physical Factor: the warm-up gives you, the
coach, a chance to start all of
your
players
moving
around
in a reasonably controlled environment,
and
building
them up through
increasing intensity
of
movement so that
they are
ready for
training, or
a game situation. It
gives all players an
opportunity
to
get
blood
flowing to the
muscles that they are
likely to be
putting under pressure when
they start
getting
competitive and moving at
100% intensity.

Think about these factors
when preparing your warm-up:

• Start with slow dynamic movements like jogging,
skipping side-shuffling
• Build up the intensity as the warm-up continues
• Try to mimic movement patterns you are about to
perform
– e.g. if you’re about to field, practice lunging
into a pick-up, or bring in some
..........arm
movement if about
to throw or bowl.
• Be inventive; set up your warm-ups simply, but bring in
new games and
...challenges
to ignite the body and mind.
