Catching Drills

High Catching Skills

Skills: High catching, ball overhead, running catches.

Set-up: You need a set of stumps, a bat and a ball. Or a tennis racquet and tennis ball
depending on age/skill level of players. (and hitting skills of the coach!)

Activity: Coach starts next to the stumps, and w/k is on the stumps ready to take return throw.
Player starts next to the stumps as well. Coach hits the ball high in the air, and only when the
ball is struck can the player run from their starting position to try to get under the high catch.
Once they’ve made the catch, they throw the ball back over the stumps.

Variations

Pairs: With a slightly larger group of players, send them out in pairs. Both have to start at the same
time, one calls the catch and when they’ve taken it, pass it to their partner to throw back to keeper.
Encourage thrower to be within 2m of the catcher when the catch is taken.

Blind Catch: Set-up with both players facing away from the way they are going to run. They are
only allowed to turn and look for the ball once they’ve heard the ball on the bat! One.catches, and
one throws back.

Fitness Catching: Not for the faint-hearted. Set a challenge of a number of catches, e.g. 8 per pair.
The first player catches the first half with their partner throwing back to the keeper, and vice-versa
for the second half. Coach tries to time it so that the players have to run and catch each one, and the
partner has to be within 2m of each catch. It’s harder than it sounds!
